This article explores the intersection between traditional connoisseurship and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the domain of art authentication. It begins by tracing the historical evolution from conventional human expertise to the incorporation of technical art history and AI methodologies. The focus then shifts to an in-depth analysis of a painting of Don Diego Messía Felipe de Guzmán, Marqués de Leganés, attributed to Anthony Van Dyck. The art historical examination reveals significant stylistic and technical discrepancies, indicative of a workshop origin rather than van Dyck himself. The AI analysis supports this conclusion with a 79% probability. This collaborative effort underscores the potential of integrating traditional connoisseurship with AI, to significantly advance the field of art authentication.
