Kurzfassung

This study examines Jannis Kounellis' installations in Germany and Israel, exploring their historical, social and cultural contexts. It explores how Kounellis engages with the cultural memory and history of these sites and how he connects cultural-historical objects and symbols to the history of each site through symbolic representation using qualitative methods such as fieldwork and participant observation. Kounellis' cultural sensitivity imbues his works with narratives that vary from site to site. Some installations relate historical events to each other, like Kristallnacht in 1938 and the ensuing migration of Jews from Germany to Palestine, which culminated in the founding of the state of Israel in 1948.
